Three hundred veterans in the Local 6 area could soon have a place to call their own thanks to a popular trend: tiny homes.
A proposed veterans camp in rural Williamson County, Illinois, would be made up of tiny homes made by EZ Portable buildings, and would be exclusively for veterans, families of deployed troops, and families of those who lost their lives.
“I see a multi-generational campus for all kinds of veterans, from all different circumstances,” said veteran Bruce Sheffler.
The signs on the property now may say no trespassing, but less than two weeks after opening for applications, Sheffler says Vets4Vets has already received more than two dozen applications hoping to call one of these tiny houses home.
“They’re nice little standalone units in one or two bedrooms,” said Sheffler. “The whole thing is it’s efficient.”
Carl Ortale made the project possible by providing the land, and the homes are being purchased with private funds.
There are subsidies available for homeless veterans to pay the $20 a day rent.
