Are you looking to downsize? If so, then this tiny house might be for you. Dubbed “Sparty’s Cabin,” the tiny house is up for auction through the Michigan State University Surplus Store. Among the key features of the little house are the hand-crafted wood counter top, shelves and sliding door.
Bidding on the structure is open until 1 p.m. on Nov. 19. The minimum bid that will be accepted is $35,000. The manufacturer’s suggested retail price for this style tiny house is $61,000.
Sparty’s Cabin was a student project from the Construction Management program. While some portions were professionally built to meet building codes, much of the cabin was handbuilt by MSU students. Among the key features of this project are the hand-crafted wood counter top, shelves, and sliding door which were built of wood from the MSU Shadows program.
The structure was built on a trailer, allowing it to be easily transported from place to place. Sparty’s Cabin will include traditional hook ups for sewer, water and electricity; however, it can be retrofitted in the future to go off the grid. This can be accomplished by capturing rainwater, using 100 percent solar power energy and adding a composting toilet. Once constructed, the Tiny House is 177 square feet of space that sleeps three, and features both an upstairs (sleeping loft and storage) and a downstairs (great room/kitchen, bathroom and bedroom).
The winning bidder will be responsible for payment of all applicable taxes on the full purchase price. All proceeds will benefit the School of Planning, Design and Construction, including programmatic and student support for the Construction Management, Landscape Architecture, Interior Design, and Urban Planning departments.
