05/02 “It’s not an RV, it’s not a mobile home,” says 84 Lumber

Tiny houses have been popping up all over the place. But 84 Lumber, in Washington County, PA, is the first major retailer enter the market.

“This is 84 Lumber’s first tiny house,” says spokesman Tom Kuntz. He introduces us to the Company’s “rustic cabin” model.

“The door that separates the bathroom and the closet is reclaimed wood. We pulled it off a barn across from the 84 store. 32 inch shower. We have a sink, obviously. Mini-refrigerator. Upstairs is the bedroom. Left foot, right foot, knee, and you’re in the loft,” he said.

With less than 200 square feet, they’re even tinier than most tiny houses. On the other hand, they have wheels.

“It’s not an RV, it’s not a mobile home. It’s two-by-four wall construction. It’s two and a half inch insulation.”

The company also models a “beach house” and a “contemporary” house. Both tiny, of course.

There are three options for buyers.

“The trailer and the plans for approximately seven thousand dollars,” Kuntz says.

Then there’s the “shelled-in” version.

“You get basically the walls, the roof, the windows are in it. The shower’s in it. The front door’s in it. You add the roofing, the siding, and choose the whole inside.”
