The new year is a chance for fresh beginnings and an opportunity to look at where you were last year and where you want to go. This can be an exciting time, but it can also be overwhelming. One of the challenges I have each year is trying to decide what I need to do to get closer to my dream life. The good news is with a little bit of planning and a lot of action you can move closer to the life you really want to live.

These steps helped me!

1. Define Your Dream!

Before you start on your tiny house journey, decide what you want out of life. What does your dream life look like? If you can’t answer that, you can’t make it a reality. Dreaming big is what motivated me to downsize and move into my tiny home. It was a stepping stone for the dream life I am working towards.

My dream life includes settling close to the beach, with the opportunity to travel around the country seeing national parks and running half-marathons. My dream life is about having enough savings and passive income that I can choose when and how to work. Right now that dream involves me running a few of my own businesses, pursuing photography and spending lots of time on the water. It’s about prioritizing my money and time expenditures in a way that makes me feel alive and fulfilled.

This dream is what kept me motivated when I had doubts about my decision to downsize. Making sure you understand where you want to go will give you the ability to move forward with confidence and excitement.

2. Take Stock of Where You Are Starting From

Once you know what your dream looks like, figure out where you are starting from. Make sure you know what you need to accomplish to get to where you want to go. Part of achieving any goal is taking an honest look at what you need to change to get there. This can be a scary endeavor. It’s never fun realizing that we aren’t living the life we really want, but the good news is if we are honest about where we are starting from, we can figure out what we need to do get to where we really want to be.

When I started dreaming big, I realized I needed to change my spending habits, reduce my debt and make some changes in what I believed was possible. These were scary changes, but I knew if I really wanted my dream to become a reality, I had to make them. It meant being bold and taking action.
