4 Reasons Why Renting a Campervan is the Best Way to Travel

My husband and I recently got back from two back-to-back trips in two very different locations. One trip was to the European country of Iceland and another was to the tropical island of Kauai in Hawaii.

On your next foreign or domestic trip, here are several reasons to rent a campervan.

While the trips could not have been more different from each other, we decided to travel around each place in a campervan. We currently camp in a teardrop trailer and a 13-foot fiberglass trailer, but we love the van life and wanted to experience it in other locations. With a nod to George RR Martin, we named the trips “The Van of Ice and Fire”.

We rented a campervan in both Iceland and the island of Kauai.

We rented a panel van from Camper Rental Iceland and a mini van conversion from Lemon Drop Campers. While we love towable trailers, what we realized is that renting a campervan while visiting a foreign or domestic country is the best way to travel.

Campervan travel in Iceland is very popular and very easy.

Why is this? We tend to travel internationally several different ways. We either pick a small part of a country or city, get an Airbnb, and use public transportation. Sometimes we rent a car and move to one or two other locations. While this is a great and efficient way to travel, you are tied down to a specific part of the city or country and need to report back to your house or apartment each night.

Bonus #1: Your van kitchen is with you at all times.

If you are comfortable with camping and driving in a foreign country or big city, renting a campervan will give you the freedom that travel epitomizes. So here are the top four reasons why renting a campervan while traveling is the best.

Bonus #2: Beachfront access without beachfront prices.

  1. If you are comfortable with camping, renting a campervan is like having your bed, kitchen, and transportation in one relatively comfortable package at all places and times.
  2. Being mobile allows you to change your plans on a moment’s notice. In both Iceland and Kauai we changed our plans on a dime due to weather, traffic, beach or waterfall whims, or campground access.
  3. You get to experience more of the “real” location. Rather than staying in a resort, a downtown hotel, or even a hip neighborhood, you get to see how the locals live, eat, and shop. In addition, since you are mobile you get to see what camping is like in different areas of your chosen country or city.
  4. Renting a campervan (or two) is a wonderful way to find out if the van camping style or lifestyle is right for you. What do you like or dislike about it? What type of vehicle is more comfortable for your type of travel or on-the-road living? What would you change about your chosen van?
